The healthcare provider course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, and oxygen), use of and automated external defibrillator (AED) and relief of foreign-body airway obstructions(FBAO). It is intended for participants who provide health care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.
The Heartsaver CPR course is a modular course that teaches lay rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for aduld child and infant victims . Students also learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults and breathing difficulties in children. Three program choices exist. They are: Heartsaver CPR for all ages Heartsaver CPR for Adults Heartsaver CPR for Infants and Children (Infant to 8 years old)
The Heartsaver AED course teaches the basic techniques of adult CPR and the use of an AED. Students also learn about using barrier devices in CPR and giving First-aid for choking. The course teaches how to recognize the signs of four major emergencies: Heart attack, Stroke, Cardiac Arrest, and Foreign-Body Airway Obstruction.
The CPR for Family and Friends course is a modular course that teaches rescuers skills in CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction. It presents information about the AHA adult Chain of Survival and signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking in adults. The course also presents information on the AHA pediatric infant and child Chain of Survival, signs of choking in infants and children, prevention of sudden infant death syndrome, and prevention of the most common fatal injuries in infants and childern.
The purpose of the Heartsaver First-Aid course is to teach rescuers the knowledge and psychomotor skills they need to recognize emergencies at the worksite and give first-aid.

Healthcare providers such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physician's assistants, residents of fellows or medical or nursing students in training, aides, medical or nursing assistants and other allied health personnel.
All lay rescuers, such as employees in the workplace, daycare employees, baby-sitters, firefighters, police, airline personnel, security guards, family members of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death, other lay rescuers and those who may have a need to respond to an emergency.
All lay responders, such as firefighters, police, airline personnel, security guards, employees in the workplace, family members of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death, other lay rescuers and those who may have a need to respond to a cardiac emergency.
All lay rescuers, such as school children, family members of patients at risk for sudden cardiac death, and other lay persons who want to learn rescue skills for loved ones.
Some rescuers are required to take this course as part of their employer's effort to comply with OSHA regulations. For others, whose work may involve interaction with the public, such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, flight attendants, and lifeguards, taking this course may be a requirement of their job description.
